Credit Counseling Requirement
In 2005, the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 made credit counseling a requirement for consumer debtors filing for Bankruptcy in the United States. In order to meet this requirement, during the 180-day period preceding the filing of bankruptcy, the debtor must complete a program with an approved nonprofit budget and credit counseling agency.

What is credit counseling?
Credit counseling is a form of counseling that allows debtor to review their debts, income and assets with an individual or agency.

What will I learn during the counseling session?
During your counseling session, you will be taught debt management techniques, come up with feasible budgets and also be provided with bankruptcy information.

How long does credit counseling take?
Typically, credit counseling will take approximately 60 to 90 minutes.

How can I complete my credit counseling?
Credit counseling sessions may be completed in person, over the phone, or over the internet.

How much does credit counseling cost?
Typically, a credit counseling session costs between $50 and $75.

What happens after credit counseling?
Upon completion of credit counseling you will receive a certificate of completion. In order to be eligible to file for bankruptcy you must show proof of a certificate of completion.
